Books
Music
Concerts
Fic
I'm not really keeping track of TV anymore but I watched Constellation this month! Apparently it was already canceled by AppleTV because of course. It objectively isn't that scary but somehow still managed to make me look away from the screen. If anyone has other AppleTV recs, pls send them my way~
Books
- Sellout: The Major-Label Feeding Frenzy That Swept Punk, Emo and Hardcore, by Dan Ozzi
- Another buddy read with Pop! We continued my emo education and her walk down memory lane. Our reads of these books are always very different; as someone who wasn't into emo I basically only knew who became mega successful to help guide me through the chapters. Each chapter focuses on one band, moving through the decade in chronological order, as opposed to Where Are Your Boys Tonight?, which looked at many bands in certain time periods. We watch these bands sign their first major record deal and see where that took them - often, the chapter stops before the group has their biggest hit (for ex Green Day's chapter is about Dookie, but I definitely knew them best for American Idiot). The chapters also discuss the concept of selling out - how it did or didn't affect their career, whether selling out was even an issue by the time they signed, etc. I think it was easier to keep the cast of characters straight in this book compared to Where Are Your Boys, but each chapter in this book also felt a little more repetitive. I think it was also interesting that this book ended with a reflection from some band members, most of whom wished they had enjoyed that period more.
- Frostbite: How Refrigeration Changed Our Food, Our Planet, and Ourselves, by Nicola Twilley
- A nonfiction book about the history of refrigeration, the current cold chain, and opportunities for failure or success as developing countries build more infrastructure. To me, refrigeration is invisible infrastructure that I never think about, so I found it pretty engaging. I listened to it at the beginning of the month so I have unfortunately lost all my specific examples, but it was a little mind blowing to think about how the food we eat is often times decided by how well the food travels? Like certain types of apple are more popular in the US because they travel well under refrigeration and therefore that is what is sold to us. It feels very 'well duh' to type that out but I promise the actual examples were way more interesting.

Concerts
- NCT Dream
- My first time seeing them! I wouldn't call myself a huge dream fan but I do enjoy quite a few of their songs. I went into the concert with a Mark-by-default bias, but after shipping him with literally all of his members throughout the show, I would say he is probably my actual bias. However, Haechan was probably my concert bias....listen I love when someone stands off to the side and wails while everyone else does choreo.
- Everglow
- Their tour concerns me....they had to cancel a bunch of stops, 1 member couldn't participate and another was injured, and my show had at least half the upper balcony unsold. Sigh. But I had to go to support the girlies! Every time I see them in concert I am reminded that I like their music. They also had a good choice of covers which can be so hit or miss at shows: Born This Way, Stronger, and an Aespa song. I left with a Mia bias. I would say the crowd was a little annoying at this show...one guy in the back just yelled things to them constantly. Somehow for both shows I had clear views while sitting so that was nice...I ended up sitting for all of the Everglow show.
Fic
- A good month for fic for me. Jeonghan enlistment fic, woosanjoong Emma au cowrite with pop, and the silly juhwa version of the Emma au with pop. I wrote ~14k this month, which I believe was my 3rd highest month since I started tracking in 2020.
